Mission Statement

The Mission of UMAJA is to establish relationships between current and future University of Michigan Jewish alumni. UMAJA strives to provide opportunities and programs that enhance the ways in which people identify Jewishly. UMAJA works to develop networks within the larger University of Michigan and global Jewish communities, strengthen the identification of Jewish students with the Jewish world, and help create, support, and foster a vibrant and diverse Jewish life and culture as alumni integrate into communities all over the world. This will be accomplished through the four guiding principles: leadership, Jewish identity, social action, and mentorship.

Guiding Principles

The guiding principles of UMAJA will be social action, Jewish identity, leadership, and mentorship as defined below.

Leadership- The University of Michigan trains and educates the “Leaders and Best.” We recognize the importance of being a leader in UMAJA upholding the goals and principles of the organization with passion and commitment. The Michigan Difference produces individuals who embrace leadership through education and integrity.

Jewish Identity- UMAJA believes that all members, regardless of religious and political affiliations, can join together in one cohesive community. We appreciate that differences make our organization stronger. UMAJA is a pluralistic organization. Pluralism within UMAJA is defined as the realization and acceptance of the differences within our oneness.

Social Action- Social action is an important part of our Jewish identity. UMAJA works to help Jews and others in need, and strives to form a better world.

Mentorship- UMAJA serves as a networking tool to assist younger alumni with their integration into the “real world.” The strength of UMAJA lies in its ability to connect us to one another. UMAJA’s focus on mentorship defines and results in valuable experiences for both the mentors and mentees.
